Anything Can Be Anything and Dramatica

You’re not alone. Part of me believes this statement is not far from the truth. Especially in the direction of creation. Perhaps in the direction of analysis as well.

A recent conversation got pretty heated when discussing this idea.

Three possibilities:

  • Either the entire industry uses Dramatica and they choose to hide this fact

OR

  • It really is flexible in analysis and creation.

I’m fine with either of these ideas.

  • However, the third idea that the mind works this way subconsciously and that is how almost all screenwriters, movie makers, writers, etc. create Dramatica SFs without any knowledge of Dramatica…

Why do I need a complex theory of something that is already happening organically in my brain?

I’m not throwing down the gauntlet or anything like that. It doesn’t much matter to me. It only matters if it improves my writing.

This doesn’t account for older stories, like Shakespeare plays, fitting perfectly into Dramatica storyforms.

You don’t, if you’re like Shakespeare and capable of creating a perfect Grand Argument Story structure every time you try. But most of us need help from time to time.
