Can a Protagonist be dead?

My protagonist is an old man who has been holding the fort down for years. When events start to take off, he dies. But he leaves behind the necessary instructions to complete the story’s goal. Will the readers accept this?

Thanks,

I’d say it depends on how you handle it.

Have you seen PS I Love You? It has a character that dies and leaves instructions to another character. I don’t know if he would be considered the protagonist, but the whole idea behind the movie was that this character was going to die and leave instructions and I think it worked pretty well.

Manchester by the Sea is a great example of this. Lee’s brother, Joe (Kyle Chandler) represents both motivations of Pursuit and Consider within the context of the Overall Story Goal of Figuring Out What to Do About Patrick (Conceptualizing). Lee, while the Main Character, exhibits the motivations of Avoid and Reconsider–making him the Antagonist.

This made me think immediately of The Sixth Sense.
