Geoff’s Hierarchy of Needs in Film

I enjoy watching Youtube reviews of independent film makers, such as Ralph the Movie Maker, James Nguyen, and Tommy Wiseau. I also enjoy watching Siskel and Ebert movie reviews. It’s educational because the same criticisms keep popping up. So, I put together two — perhaps three in the future — hierarchical levels of film concerns.

First, there’s the Competence Level: shot composition, sound design, color scheme and image system. Mastering these techniques graduates you to the Siskel and Ebert Level.

At the Siskel and Ebert Level, the concerns are about appropriateness of character behavior and marketing considerations.

Perhaps Dramatica is in sideways, or it’s the top third level.
