IC Character Hand-off?

Can the role of the IC character be handed off from one to another?

For example, what if the IC character dies during the course of the story? I guess the spirit or memory of the IC character might continue to push our friendly MC on to bigger and better things – but what if, instead, some other character emerges to take the place of our dearly departed IC? Thoughts? Examples?

Thanks.

Yes, it can be handed off. I’m lacking an example off the top of my head, but the IC can, in fact, be dead/not present as long as they serve the function of influencing the main character.

Thanks.

I also found a lot of useful material about IC Hand-offs at the Dramatica.com website.

So, now, if the IC is handed off, then how does the software handle this? Example, if character “IC-1” is the original IC, and character “IC-2” assumes the role at some point, then what character is entered in the software as the IC character? Character “IC-X” – which would be a synthesis of the two? I understand that both IC-1 & IC-2 should have the same elements, but what about the name? There’s only one entry allowed for IC in the software.

Thanks.

I don’t believe there is a way to differentiate in the software because it looks at it as a function first and foremost.

In my experience, I knew there was going to be a handoff when the IC was separated from the remaining survivors of a story I wrote and that the function would be handed off to another character, their own perspective changing (a bit) upon seeing something that validated the original IC’s perspective. The character taking the handoff at this point pleads with the MC and circumstances forces them apart and the MC back to find the original IC.

Since the function and transference happened in a single scene, it wasn’t a big deal to me - just something I was consciously aware of since I didn’t use the software to build the scenes. However, if you do choose to use it, you’ll notice the characters are listed by function. In short, I think it’s just something one has to mentally keep track of when there’s more than a single player.

No way to do it in the software. You have to take care of the bookkeeping on that end.
