Story Assembly -- Putting it all to work

Thank you, so much! I was spinning in a rudderless dingy , and you have given me a paddle.

Relationship throughline
INHIBITOR: Gathering Evidence for Someone

Sebastian goes to animators’ desks pretending to look at their drawings, but he is looking at correspondence and anything with numbers. Going to other desks and getting caught up with other characters’ nutty traits and demands on his time could be entertaining as well as a temporary time inhibitor.

or

Sebastian volunteered to run errands for the other animators and management, which enabled him to look through correspondence and accounting numbers.

I should probably keep my 2¢ to myself. I suppose u were talking about someone gathering evidence from Sebastian which works I guess. Sorry for being obtuse.

Dear Prish:

Hope I’m not going too far… But based on my understanding of all the terms you’re starting with – “Relationship throughline: INHIBITOR: Gathering Evidence for Someone” – I think you must include Marybeth in your description of the Inhibitor. This “Gathering Evidence for Someone” is the Relationship Story Throughline’s Inhibitor, after all.

So the Gathering of Evidence needs to be something that slows down/inhibits the romantic relationship between Marybeth and Sebastian, rather than speeding that romance up (which would be the RS Catalyst’s job).

For example, maybe Sebastian invites her to lunch, and she hopes it’s for romantic reasons. But actually, his focus is on how, when Marybeth goes in for her first job interview, she can help him get evidence that “Mr. Fleischer and his cronies aren’t paying these blind animators all they promised to.”

That’s just one example of how Gathering Evidence could inhibit their relationship – and it’s in keeping with how I illustrated the RS Domain of “Controlling a Particular Group’s Thoughts,” which you’ll find in the “Story” storyform that JHull is maintaining.

In fewer words, maybe you could make the RS Inhibitor something like:

"While Marybeth tries to gather evidence that Fleischer Studios is a good-and-reliable place to work, Sebastian keeps looking for ways to prove that ‘these Fleischer guys are total crooks, just like all the other big-money guys in their skyscrapers!’ "

And that’s just my 2¢…

There is no such thing as going “too far”, never fear.

Every time Marybeth compiles their latest evidence for them to turn it in, Sebastian hides with it, overworking it to make it more “perfect”.

Hi @Prish, this works but what “evidence” are you referring to??

Marybeth and Sebastian have to prove to an FBI over-achiever investigator that the animators came up with the mob storylines through the creative process and that Sebastian is innocent of being a mob guy. Sebastian’s visits to the docks, looking for evidence of Atlantis, got misinterpreted as meeting up with mob guys.

Is there anyway you could incorporate the Domain of the Relationship into your example? I get so confused when I read it–like there are a dozen different competing thoughts going on, almost as if you’re trying to squeeze too much in there. For this exercise, the simpler you write the better the end result.

MaryBeth wants to influence the chauvinists at the studio, Sebastian wants to motivate the underemployed with her art instead. There is a natural conflict here in terms of a way of thinking, that gathering evidence for someone could help temper.

Fleischer Studios was innovative for using grungy atmosphere. Marybeth draws activities and scenes of the poor areas of town and the docks to provide evidence that she is a brilliant artist and animator, showing she is the best talent for Fleischer’s edgy, adult mood. Sebastian looks through them, holds onto them, categorizing them, mounting them, placing them in presentation books, so they can be used as evidence of too much poverty and unemployment. He sees this evidence as a perfect way to inspire the masses to rise up and create changes.

She thinks he is turning them in, and he thinks she is on board to use them to help the proletariat.

Or

She has to keep tracking him down to get him to pass them onto his studio heads.

Wow! Now that’s a great one…see how well it works within the Domain of Manipulation? Thanks! Adding it to the page. @jamjam1794’s turn…

I think you nailed that one Prish. Awesome that you kept going to find the right “evidence.”

And awesome back at you guys for clarifying, repeatedly!

This whole process is incredibly helpful. I don’t think it would be as meaningful if I hadn’t already studied the theory and worked with the software, but this exercise really snaps all of the more abstract ideas into a concrete form. It also shows the processes writers use to work out the foundation for an effective story (case in point: Prish’s Inhibitor). Great job, everyone!

DIVIDEND: Being Memorialized
The women in the studio are honored with a mural of themselves - they are the first women working in the animation industry.

I’m new to this discussion group, and newer to this thread. Looks interesting. Is there a way that I can get up to speed with what you’ve done so far. I’ve skimmed the posts, but, as a newbie, find much that isn’t clear. Is there a common Dramatica story file that you’re all working from/on? If so, where can it be found? If not, how does one catch up with this train? Or should I just wait for the next one?

@igregor start at post 29
Where @jhull has a link to the story form and then down to about 35 where JHull has a link to story and you will get caught up to what we have created so far. It may help you and the rest of us if you read all posts up till here to get true ly caught up and learn from our mistakes.

I assume you can be added to the list, taking a turn. Just choose one item in the storyform that has not been done, then give your “take on it”, as jhull says. He is leading the group exercise because he is expert in the dramatica use, because this is his writing hobby, and because he is organizing this whole kit and kaboodle. We just keep trying different things until we get it right, so if you don’t mind being embarrassed, (HaHa) just jump in, imho. Jim has a very busy job, and he will answer on this, eventually.

Also, from past, overly-exuberant experience, Jim will also tell you when it’s your turn to jump in. We’re on a turn-based trip here. The list is around entry 35.

Thanks. Found it. Not sure what I might contribute, but will watch and await an opportunity.

@iGregor I can add you if you want. The link to the story can be found at the very top. If you want there is a navigation tool over on the lower right. You can either jump to #35 to see who is next in line (this is what I do), or you can jump to the top to get to the links.
