I’m working on my series storyform now, after getting my Book 1 outline pretty solid.
I’m wondering about my choice of Fact
as the OS Issue. Fact is defined as “belief in something real”, and I just noticed now that the online dictionary has a little addendum (bolded below) when compared with the software on Windows:
Fact is something that is truly real as opposed to just seeming to be real. Of course, from a character’s subjective view, when something seems to be real it is impossible to tell from actual fact. No matter how strongly a belief, understanding, or knowledge of something is held, subjectively there is always the possibility some change in the situation or additional information will prove it to be unfactual. Optical illusions are a good case in point. The moment a character accepts something as fact is the moment a thematic conflict might begin to grow. Nevertheless, Fact represents beliefs that turn out to be real.
See, I had chosen Fact because in my story there is this big System set up to make people believe stuff that isn’t real, but it’s setup so carefully that everything seems real – so there’s no need for Faith or Trust or anything like that. And I thought that conflict of “impossible to tell from actual fact” and optical illusions worked really well.
But because I know as as the Author that it’s not real (and some of the characters know while most will eventually find out), maybe Fantasy or something else is actually the Issue here… Especially with that addendum to the definition.
On the other hand, maybe Fact still works, but it represents the conflict of seeking out the actual real Facts that disprove the System’s false “facts” … many of which are being kept secret and hard to dredge up, especially with the powers that be fighting to keep the truth from getting out, etc. Hmm…
