Which archtype character?

The TV series, Quincy, has a boss character, Dr. Robert Asten, who always digs in his heels that the department cannot, will not, spend the money or waste time on an unnecessary investigation, at the beginning of the show. Later, he surrenders to Quincy’s determination for justice and truth, and gives his permission. It is funny to see the stages of his coming around. I putter around the house, as the husband watches the show, and have come to appreciate the writers’ talent with this character.

If anyone remembers the show, is this a case of a Skeptic turning into a Sidekick?

I definitely remember the show. I remember the family sitting down to watch it (yes, children, in the days when you had to arrange your schedule or else you wouldn’t see the show until the summer reruns). Quincy was the precursor to CSI and even Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta… I remember the character, but I don’t remember much about the arc. Sounds right, though.

He is such a fun character, I am thinking using such a character in scripts might help create a broad audience base. It sure would make writing a series, whether video or book, fun to tinker with. I am starting to look for ways to outrun writer’s block. Perhaps having a list of recurring characters that I enjoy would help.

Makes sense. If you like all the characters, even the “bad guys,” then any scene you write is going to have a sense of excitement to it. I just got through reading Bleak House and was amazed at how many individual characters Dickens was able to create, each with his or her own unique qualities. Even the evil ones had texture to them. Certainly not two-dimensional… Still a freakin’ long novel, though.
