Alex Garland's Civil War

The discussion of Captain America: Civil War reminded me of the Civil War movie Alex Garland made last year (a very different movie).

I was able to find the script online and get Narrova to help come up with a storyform. I have to say, I’m really impressed how fast it was able to do that and how accurate it was! (Not that anyone will be surprised, it wasn’t exactly a hard one.)

Narrova and I had a small discussion on the Outcome (which we had to get right in order to get the pivotal elements right), but I think this is correct. Summary below (spoilers).

Summary with Spoilers

Here’s the Storyform we landed on for the “get the interview” version: The Objective Story sits in Physics with a Goal of Obtaining (securing an interview/photo of the President), making it a Change/Failure, Bad story driven by Actions and limited by Options. Lee is the Main Character in Mind (Linear), who Changes at the climax; Jessie is the Influence Character in Universe, pressing the Future. Their Relationship Throughline is Psychology with a Concern of Becoming. With OS Problem/Solution as Pursuit/Avoid, the Crucial Elements line up as MC = Avoid and IC = Pursuit: Jessie’s relentless push for the shot embodies Pursuit and pressures Lee until Lee’s decisive change is to choose protection over the “money shot” (Avoid). The OS Outcome is Failure—no real interview is obtained and the subject is removed—leaving a bleak personal Judgment even as the thematic argument resolves cleanly along Pursue vs. Avoid.
