New User Questions

Hello, I’m a brand new user to both the Dramatica theory and the Dramatica platform. I watched some of the videos from two years ago, watched the new AI videos that talked about the concept of Dramatica, and watched a video from November 2025 that worked through some of the platform.

I signed up for Basic ($20/month) and started poking around and brainstorming with Narrova. I used 11% of my allowance just brainstorming ideas, but then settled on one and went to the Story Guide to flesh it out. I used the remaining 89% of my allowance answering questions to build the story. I did almost all of my brainstorming outside of Dramatica using other chatbots, and then brought the answer in to Story Guide.

I have a few questions/concerns with the process so far.

1. I realize I’m on the basic plan, but I used 89% of my allowance in roughly 60-90 minutes on one story and haven’t reached the end of the questions yet. Does this mean that it will take me a minimum of two months to build out a story on this plan?
2. I don’t see any way to determine how far along in the questions I am. How do I know if I’m going to be able to finish the process with my complimentary reset?
3. My context window is filling up. If I start a new conversation, can I pick up where I left off and save some tokens?
4. How much additional usage do I get from the Plus plan ($50/month)?

I’m not sure if the Basic plan just isn’t really usable for story development or if I’m doing something wrong. I’m also not sure what to do after I finish answering these questions, how to turn it into a story form, etc. There was a tutorial from 2 years ago that looks nothing like the platform I see today, and I can’t find a good tutorial that really shows me how to use the system from start to finish.

If someone could point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it. It looks like I got my complimentary reset but I don’t want to waste it until I have a better idea of what I’m doing. Thank you!

Thanks so much for the questions and giving us a chance to help you out – I will do my best to answer.

A general note about Usage: we are always working daily to increase efficiencies across the entire platform, meaning you can always count on each month increasing more and more from the month before.

Using other chatbots to brainstorm general ideas sounds like a great idea. Obviously, it would be best to do it in platform as Narrova (and the Story Guide) will be able to build on those ideas more concretely BUT there’s nothing to say that this isn’t a perfectly valid approach.

1. It’s hard to say for sure as every writer is different, both in how much they want to work through ahead of time, during their writing process, or after – and also how much they detail they expect or want. We always get requests for “how much can I expect to get” but it’s a really difficult thing to qualify as there is so much depth and complexity to the platform overall.

2. In the Story Guide specifically you should have a Story Guide Progress “rail” that appears either to the far right in desktop OR pops up from the bottom on mobile.

That said, in getting these screenshots for you I can see there is an issue with some screen sizes not showing the Progress guide properly - I’m already rolling out a fix for it now (thanks for your patience!)

3. Context windows issues are largely solved, meaning–you can just continue for as long as you want in a single thread and it won’t be anymore inefficient than starting a new thread. In some regards, that context meter is out-of-dated and we’re really just using it as a shortcut to some of the other options (Intelligence/Verbosity).

I will say, from a theoretical standpoint, once you do have a Storyform attached as context, starting a new thread can really help in that you can isolate and focus on different parts of the Storyform, without any of the crosstalk that comes from developing other sections. In short, having the Storyform context is an excellent way to make sure all threads stay thematically consistent across a single Storyform.

4. Pro and Plus are 7x what you see in Basic. Pro has the added benefit of resetting Usage weekly instead of monthly.

And in regards to complimentary Reset, if you’re the one I just sent that out too, then yes! Again, thanks for the heads-up there was an issue with new accounts, some did not receive this bonus so I’m glad we were able to make it work out for you.

Story Guide and Narrova

And this is one of the reasons why we hand out the free reset - you have been working in the Story Guide, which is a great way to tease out the various threads of your story through concepts like Character, Plot, Theme, and Genre. You can think of it as pre-Dramatica work in that it’s meant to help guide you through the storytelling before you set yourself up with a Storyform.

Narrova, on the other hand, is geared to take you through the entire Dramatica process of Storyforming, Story Encoding, Storyweaving, and finally Story Reception. Not that you have to go in that order, but the theory is that the author is there with the Storyform, and Story Reception is where the Audience sits; everything in-between helps transmit the storyform to the audience (ie, the argument of the author).

We recently just put back up the entire Dramatica theory book (with some excellent typography!) here: Dramatica: A New Theory of Story so that can be a valuable resource in seeing all that Dramatica has to offer your story.

Once you feel like you have enough of your story, that you really want to start nailing down the specific structure, that’s when you’ll want to open up Narrova and start diving in deep there.

It’s important to note that the Story Guide and Narrova are two separate things - conversations in the Story Guide can’t be opened in Narrova and vice-versa. That said, you can access the history of said conversations in the other simply by asking – and you can make things easier IF you set a Story Context for the work you did in the Story Guide.

When you start up in Narrova, just set the Context to the Story you were working on, and then go to town developing in more detail your story.

Lastly, we just opened up access to the next version of Narrova (called One Narrova) - which is much more efficient than the last version. All you have to do is go into your Preferences > Early Features and turn on One Narrova - be sure to turn on the Advisors as well to take advantage of all it has to offer.

Of course, if you want to scale back and hold off on all that greatness, you can always just run One Narrova without them.

Wow, this is great and helps to answer a lot of my questions–thanks! I’m planning on using Dramatica to start with a setting/conflict/general vibe and build out the story, rather than bringing an existing mostly-developed story in. So far it’s going well with the Story Guide.

Before your screenshots, I had never seen the Story Guide rail before. I had my browser taking up 50% of my screen so that I could multitask and it didn’t pop up until I dragged it larger. Egads, I’m still in Characters!

You said that I can’t access the Story Guide conversations in Narrova, but I do have the Story Context on and I see that when I open the Story there’s a lot of the information present that I’ve given Story Guide. I’m assuming Narrova has access to all of this, so spending time in Story Guide will transfer in part to Narrova?

I’m interested in switching over to One Narrova–might as well learn the latest and greatest from the get-go–but I don’t see it as an option in the Early Features. I do see Narrova Advisors so I switched that on. I’ll check back later and see if it’s appeared. In the meantime, I’ll go watch the Inside Narrova series to be better prepared.

Yes, for sure. I even double-checked after you sent this yesterday and that is the case.

Story Guide and Narrova keep separate conversation histories, so a conversation from one cannot be opened inside the other. However, Story Context is shared across the platform. When both conversations are attached to the same Story, Narrova can search across both Story Guide and Narrova conversations to recover earlier ideas and decisions.

As far as access to One Narrova goes, there was an issue where new subscribers weren’t seeing it — but you should now.

I’m back with a couple more comments and questions, but also some exposition here just in case there are other new users to the platform that find this information helpful.

Before I started doing anything in Narrova, I went back to watch the Inside Narrova series so I knew what to expect. This was surprisingly difficult because the first video on the YouTube channel says it’s part two, but there is no part one. I finally stumbled across the Livestreams on the platform and found five other videos related to the Indy story. These were **extremely** helpful and, in my opinion, should be on the YouTube channel. I still have two of the YouTube recordings to watch, but I felt comfortable enough to risk my subscription tokens on using Narrova.

I switched over to One Narrova and it seems to be working well. I created a persona that confirmed I have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to Dramatica and to please hold my hand and tell me what order to do things. As we worked through the different questions it’s been good about keeping me focused on settling the parts that are needed to select a Storyform. As I had hoped, the story has taken some interesting twists and turns as it’s developed and I’m happy with the general direction it’s going. I’m excited to incorporate some of the details that have been decided on.

Just as I was about to lock in my Storyform, I ran out of credits again (darn Basic). But those videos have shown me the value of Dramatica and expanded my understanding of what the platform provides, so I’ve upgraded my subscription to Plus. As soon as I’m done with this message I’m diving back in. Ultimately, my hope is that I can go from a story vibe to something I can start writing with one month of Plus usage, and then the next month’s credits can be used to tweak things and brainstorm the details as I’m drafting.

As a new user, I’m most interested in the following:

1. Having Narrova hold my hand through this process. I see on the videos when you tell it what to do next, which skill to use, etc. but I don’t really know what the “next step” is because I’m still learning the theory. So having Narrova keep me on the right path and not let me wander too far into the weeds is helpful.
2. The Indy series is exactly what I needed. I’m not a film connoisseur but even I know who Indiana Jones is, so I can understand the different choices you’re making in that story. I still have two more videos to go, but ultimately it would be great to see you take a story from a basic idea/vibe to the final Dramatica product.
3. Is there an example of that final Dramatica product? I’m assuming that it will eventually have the data to export all the signposts/notes/etc that a writer would then use to guide scene creation.
4. A video series on Dramatica 101 would also be great. I’m picking up some of the concepts from the Indy videos, but a series dedicated to the basics would be really helpful. Currently I have the platform docs and the theory PDF loaded into Gemini Notebook and I just ask it questions as I go, but I do intend to read it in the near future.

Good call on the Indy series - that was something I was doing on a weekly basis just to give a first look at all the new features as we roll them out.

Haven’t had a chance to record any as of late, but hope to pick it up again soonish.

In the meantime, I’ve gone ahead and updated a playlist just about the Indy series here: Inside Narrova: Building an Indy-Style Story from Scratch

I went ahead and numbered them too (the first couple of videos were in a different series at the time).

As far as Narrova knowing “next steps”, there have been some internal updates over the weekend that should help be a better guide for this (in One Narrova) so it should start to surface those concepts without you having to ask for them. We have had “continuation” helpers in the past, but removed them to focus on increasing the overall intelligence of the system you see today.

We will probably bring them back.

And then lastly, the 101 series is something everyone asks for. There have been countless classes over the years when it comes to Dramatica theory, and I used to run a Mastering Narrative Design with Dramatica cohort prior to the AI agent explosion. I may or may not bring it back, though it’s hard to say as there’s quite a bit of work involved in putting this altogether.

We have talked about creating a Dramatica 101 series, and will pass on the info that there is some interest in this.
