Spinning Up a Story with a Storyform and Breakdowns

Yes, we’re actively developing this part of the new platform. In fact, we just finished another round of meetings this week on this very same subject. These conversations include new theory and development from Chris and Melanie (the originators of Dramatica theory) as well as some evaluation of what has been done in the past. It’s been 30 years, so its a good opportunity to look over things and make sure it captured exactly what they were going for.

One thing that has come up, and it may be known to many, but I forget as well - in a K-based system (which is what this model is), Knowledge is the thing that is held as “truth” - meaning, what is known is known and if you know what a Story Goal is you can define it, etc.

The end result of this is that the Storypoints in the Dramatica storyform are extremely accurate. We know what the MC Problem is, what the IC Issue is, and what the OS Domain is: these are known and therefore determinative and repeatable.

In a K-based system, D is the blind-spot - D meaning Desire, and is where all the inconsistencies and contradictions are “swept away” and hidden under the rug (hidden under the D!). This is why we can have an extremely accurate accounting of K-based story structure, yet find some anomalies in the temporal aspects of a narrative (like Signposts, Progressions, and Events).

That’s what you’re seeing here, and why we want to look over things and give it another go, but just know that even with what we end up with, by definition (Dramatica theory/quad theory) the Act order will always be slightly out-of-place as its that 4th item where things aren’t so defined.

More on this as things develop!
