Subtxt vs. Dramatica

I’ve used Dramatica Pro (and Storymind) for years and purchased a subscription to Subtxt/Dramatica (2nd tier) a couple of days ago.

Reading through the Welcome notes, I’m a bit confused between what Subtxt does and what Dramatica does on the site. Is Subtxt simply the GPTchat engine behind Narrova, while Narrova is Dramatica Pro with new ChatGPT features, and additional ChatGPT accessories will be added as they’re developed? Am so confused….

I guess I’m asking what is Subtxt/Dramatica doing (or will do) that the Dramatica Pro software can’t?

Also, is Melanie involved in the development? I cut my teeth on her material a few decades ago and found there was no better teacher.

Thanks so much for your help.

Edited to add: So… there are a ton of ChatGPT commands we can use to drill down and get specific info and output from Narrova? Are these commands collected somewhere, or will they be? Or is there somewhere we can go to figure out how to talk to the ghost in the machine?

Hello @wednesdaymac and welcome! Really great questions, and I’m more than happy to answer them…and I just finished a meeting with Melanie (and Chris and Stephen) - so yes, all are involved in the development. In fact, you may find that opening up Narrova, and setting the Agent to StoryGuide will be all you need – it’s the 2025 version of Melanie’s previous “StoryWeaver” app, complete with all her teachings and guidance (and approved by her–so have at it!)

Subtxt/Dramatica is the narrative platform we are building. The name may eventually change, but for now it’s meant to signify the merger between our two companies (Narrative First and Write Bros), with the intention of creating products that leverage Dramatica theory and AI for the years to come.

Narrova is the first application: it’s our multi-agentic narrative intelligence trained on all things Dramatica theory, including anything and everything written, said, or even thought about by Melanie, Chris, and anyone else involved in the development of the theory over the past 30 years. As we train and evaluate it constantly, iterating and improving daily, it’s less a “wrapper” around ChatGPT, and more an invaluable intelligence that you can tap into for a variety of different use cases.

Some of what it can do may seem “ghost in the machine” as it is created with the future in mind; namely, one where UI gives way to natural language interaction between user and AI. So yes, it can do everything the older Dramatica application can do–you just have to ask.

Part of our meeting involved going over the original algorithms that justify and create the Storyforms found in the original Dramatica theory. As we’re now all on the same page, you’ll soon see instant access to all 32K available both in Narrova and in the brand new Storyform Builder (which is essentially, a 2025-version of the ol’ Story Engine Settings window).

Subtxt is the application I built prior to the merger this year. It leverages the decades I spent learning and teaching theory as well as my practical application of such in the film and animation industry. You can think of it as the update to the Dramatica application in that you can deterministically work your way through all the different aspects of the Storyform in familiar windows, and push button interfaces. it also includes, among other things, hundreds of additional professionally curated Storyforms based on all our years evaluating and analyzing film, novels, plays, etc. (650+ of them to be more precise).

We are in the process of migrating the Subtxt application over to the Subtxt/Dramatica platform. For now, they are separate apps, but your subscription to one automatically grants you access to the other. You only need to contact us directly to manually setup the additional access.

For additional information you might reading through the documentation helpful here: Subtxt/Dramatica® as well as subscribing to our YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@subtxt-dramatica I do livestreams going over the latest features every Wednesday (and sometimes Sunday).

Welcome again, and if you have any follow-up questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Does this mean that the good old, classic Dramatica software will be discontinued in the near future? I mean, will it become completely unavailable for future computer operating systems? :frowning:
I have to admit, I’ve grown to love the program, and AI or not, I’ll miss it.
The other problem for me, honestly, as someone from Eastern Europe, is that the subscription fee for Subtxt is somewhat expensive… :worried:
I mean, I feel like this is certainly an excellent deal for American and LA screenwriters, but for people living in other parts of the world, it could completely make further use of Dramatica impossible if the old software can no longer run on Windows 12/13/14… etc.

I wouldn’t say its being discontinued as much as its transforming into something even better. If anything, ending the old process and starting this new guarantees future operation–if we didn’t do all this, how many of you out there are into dual-booting?

If you’re in a place where the subscription is prohibitive, please feel free to reach out and contact us through support. We don’t anyone to miss out on Dramatica just because of where they live…

As a web app that works in your browser, you can be assured that the new platform works across all devices and all operating systems. If we were to focus on just an iOS or Android-native app then that would cut down on accessibility for sure. This is not to say that we don’t have plans to offer those - just that our priority is making it available in the best most advanced away to everyone right away.

Lastly, with the availability of the StoryformBuilder we will be offering a Dramatica-lite version that offers access to that tool as well as future tools (like the Character Builder from the old app) - so that you can still leverage the theory without feeling like you have to keep an old Macbook from '97 running in a closet.

Oh, and there was another post asking about what you can do with older versions of Dramatica files (.dr5) - (p.s. if you asked that question, for some reason you were marked as spam and booted from the system - apologies - please feel free to sign up again and introduce yourself so it doesn’t think you’re a bot!)

It’s a great question…

…we are almost there in offering a solution where you can upload your old files and have them added to your account in the new Subtxt/Dramatica platform.

More on that in the coming months!

Hi @jhull , yes that was my question before the “spam cop” booted me lol.

i am not spam .

yes it’s a good feature to have to import are old dramatica files and continue work online. An offline version would be a great future feature as well

P.S. I am unable to subscribe to a payment plan becoase it wants to validate my email account which I never received a notification for.

Same issue I’m afraid.

If you’re not receiving the email, your email provider has some sort of spam protection in place which is preventing us from sending an email to you (detailed instructions sent in support email).
